US automobile liability, and most comprehensive and collision coverage, are not valid in Mexico. The US State Department strongly recommends that you purchase an insurance policy that will cover the cost of bail.  In the event of an accident, please be aware that the Mexican police may detain you until they determine who is at fault. You will have to show that you either have insurance recognized by the Mexican government or the financial ability to pay any judgment against you.
