MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE
Motorcycle Coverage is similar to auto coverage in that you are required by Arizona state law to have Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability.
STATE REQUIREMENTS
In most states, you are required to carry auto liability insurance and provide proof of insurance before you can license your vehicle or renew your driver’s license. If you are caught driving without insurance, you may have to pay a large fine and have your driver’s license suspended.
Most states require drivers to carry minimum liability coverage. The state of Arizona requires drivers to carry at least $15,000/$30,000 Bodily Injury limits and $10,000 Property Damage limits.
BODILY INJURY
Bodily Injury coverage pays for any person(s) injured or killed in an accident where you are at fault. Coverage includes medical expenses and lost wages. These coverages are subject to the limits and conditions of your policy. Most states require drivers to carry Bodily Injury coverage.
Some riders confuse this with “the amount of bodily injury a motorcycle can cause a person in a passenger car. This is not an accurate understanding. The key word here is “cause” regardless of whether your bike does the damage directly or not.
PROPERTY DAMAGE
Bodily Injury coverage pays for any person(s) injured or killed in an accident where you are at fault. Coverage includes medical expenses and lost wages. These coverages are subject to the limits and conditions of your policy. Most states require drivers to carry Bodily Injury coverage.
UNINSURED UNDER-INSURED MOTORIST
Uninsured Motorist coverage protects you, members of your household and your passengers in an accident with a motorist who has no insurance or is underinsured. Uninsured Motorist protection also covers you if you’re injured by a hit-and-run driver. The coverage also applies to you and the members of your household as pedestrians. Coverage includes payment of medical costs, lost wages and pain and suffering. It is required in many states. In Arizona, Underinsured Motorist protection is separate from Uninsured Motorist coverage. At Select Choice Insurance, we do not sell any auto policies without this coverage.
MEDICAL PAYMENTS
This coverage pays medical bills and funeral expenses for you or your passengers injured while riding in your vehicle. Coverage extends to you or a family member when riding as a passenger in your covered vehicle. Costs are covered up to the amount specified by the policy.
DEDUCTIBLE
The deductible is the amount of the loss you agree to pay or absorb in the event of a claim or accident. Let’s say you have a $250 deductible. If you have a fender-bender, and the bodywork costs $1150, you will pay the deductible – $250, and your insurance company will pay the balance – $900. With auto insurance, deductible amounts typically range from $50 to $1,000 per claim. Choosing a higher deductible reduces the cost of your insurance.
COLLISION DAMAGE
Collision coverage pays for damage to your vehicle that results from a collision with another vehicle or object where you are at fault. Generally, the coverage reimburses you the amount needed to repair or replace your damaged vehicle, minus the deductible. This coverage is normally required if your vehicle is leased or if you have an outstanding loan on the vehicle.
COMPREHENSIVE DAMAGE
Comprehensive coverage protects your investment in your vehicle by paying for losses resulting from fire, theft, falling objects, riots, storms, earthquakes, floods, collision with a bird or animal and other natural occurrences. Like Collision coverage, Comprehensive coverage generally includes a deductible. Comprehensive coverage is normally required if your vehicle is leased or if you have an outstanding loan on the vehicle.
ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE~
Roadside Assistance coverage provides towing to the nearest qualified repair facility and necessary labor at the place of breakdown when your motorcycle or off-road vehicle is disabled due to any of the following:
- Mechanical or electrical breakdown
- Dead battery
- Flat Tire
- Lockout
- Insufficient supply of fuel, oil, water or other fluids
- Entrapment in snow, mud, water or sand within 100 feet of roadway
CUSTOM PARTS AND EQUIPMENT COVERAGE
When you purchase Comprehensive or Collision coverage, at least $1,000 of Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE)/Accessory coverage is included in most states. Additional CPE coverage can be purchased.
CPE covers equipment, devices, accessories, enhancements and changes, other than those that the manufacturer originally installs, that alter the appearance or performance of a motorcycle or off-road vehicle. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Any electronic equipment, antennas and other devices used exclusively to send or receive audio, visual or data signals or play back recorded media, other than those that the manufacturer originally installs, that are permanently installed on the motorcycle or off-road vehicle using bolts or brackets, including slide-out brackets
- Sidecars (when attached to the insured cycle)
- Trailers designed to be pulled behind a motorcycle or off-road vehicle (when attached to the insured cycle)
- Trike conversion kits
- Custom paint, custom plating or custom exhaust
- Mower blades, plow blades or winches
- Safety riding apparel, including helmets. (Coverage is provided in the event of a Collision loss. Theft is not covered.)
Please note: We recommended you retain photos of the motorcycle and all receipts for custom parts and equipment.
Example
Your bike has a custom paint job, handlebars, levers, sissy bars and fenders that total $5,000. Because it exceeds the automatic $1,000 CPE coverage given with Comprehensive or Collision coverage, you purchase an additional $4,000 in CPE coverage to ensure the parts are covered if they’re damaged in an accident.
